Newham Sports Academy with Tessa Sanderson.

The Newham Sports Academy is the first scheme of its kind to offer full support to non-elite athletes in a range of Olympic and Paralympic sports. It gives local young people, in one of the poorest areas in England, the opportunity to take their sporting talent to another level and a chance to compete in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Newham Sports Academy is different because it offers comprehensive support to non-elite athletes aged 14 upwards, many of whom are from different backgrounds to the ‘typical’ athlete. It recruits on a special talent identification process across the disciplines using experienced sports coaches selecting talented youngsters from disabled and non disabled backgrounds.

The Academy bridges the big gap in depth between the good work that goes on in schools, through mass participation, and elite sport.  Potential athletes need a lot of support to obtain access to world class programmes run by National Sports Governing Bodies designed for those who have already reached a top 10 ranking.  With talented grass roots athletes not being able to access good medical and training facilities, coaching, equipment or financial support means that some talented athletes, especially those with less income, are not able to reach their full potential.

Led by Tessa Sanderson with a team of elite coaches, the Academy identifies young talented sports people in the Borough and provides them with:

  • tailored training, mentoring and advice,
  • access to local fitness and leisure facilities,
  • elite-level coaching from the Academy’s coaches, and
  • grants to cover the costs of competing, travel and equipment.

In addition, the Academy is linked with local partners including Sport England, English Federation of Disability Sports (EFDS), Greenwich Leisure Limited, the University of East London, Newham General Hospital and local clubs, to provide the following services:

The Newham Sports Academy provides more than a once in a life time opportunity. Seeing local people achieving success is a boost to the community, it helps inspire others to work towards achieving their goals and has the power to change lives.
